A smile is more than a sign that things are going well. It’s a symbol of kindness and goodwill – a signal to the people around you that says “all is well here” – and it can shift the atmosphere of an entire room faster than almost anything else.

A smile should really be one of the cornerstone practices of personal and spiritual development. And yet – while many development schools and teachings recommend kindness, generosity, helping others – the simple, humble smile is rarely mentioned. Why? It’s the easiest thing any of us can do, and it lifts spirits – ours and everyone else’s – with surprising power.

Of course, someone might object: “What is there to smile about? I have no reason to smile right now.” But our behavior and reactions shape our experience far more than we realize. Like attracts like. When we walk through the world scowling and deflated, we tend to attract more reasons to scowl and feel deflated. The opposite is equally true.

Try this: stand in front of a mirror and smile at yourself. If you genuinely can’t – if you can’t even pay yourself a simple compliment without cringing – that’s worth noticing. It’s a signal that your self-esteem needs attention. But assuming you can smile at yourself, notice what happens. How long before your mood shifts, even slightly? Most people find the change comes almost immediately.

It works exactly the same way with others. A single warm smile is often enough for internal tensions to begin releasing, for people to relax, and for it to become easier to summon the positive thoughts that replace the gloom and stress. One smile won’t always resolve someone’s deep problems – but smiling at each other, consistently and genuinely, significantly helps people cope with life.

Someone once said: “Life is like a mirror – if you smile at it, it smiles back at you.” And yet so many people overlook this, convinced that something so simple couldn’t possibly be powerful. They prefer to try – and usually only try – to fix their lives with complicated methods, when the simplest tool is right there on their face.

Remember the great power every one of us carries. Love for another human being can be expressed this simply: a tiny effort to move a few muscles in your face, accompanied by one warm thought. The more consciously you use this tool, the more remarkable the things that will begin to unfold around you.
