Do you want to become someone? Of course you do. The real question is: who do you want to become, and how do you plan to get there? Do you have a plan? Or are you like many people – full of wanting, but unable to move beyond the wanting, unsure how to even begin?
Here’s the good news: the process of becoming can start right now. In this article, I want to explore how to become who we want to be, how to follow through on the goals we set for ourselves, and how to turn our dreams into reality.
The Inner Magnet
Before setting out on your journey of becoming, you need to answer one fundamental question: what truly matters to you in life? Real success can only be achieved in domains that respond to your inner desire – what I call your inner magnet. And yet, instead of listening to that inner magnet, we often surrender to the pressure of our environment. We follow paths that others have chosen for us, pursue goals that society has told us are worth pursuing, and wonder why we feel hollow even when we achieve them.
If the path you’re on isn’t aligned with your inner magnet, sooner or later you’ll lose your drive. Rationalizing what you’re doing is rarely enough to sustain you through the long journey toward dreams and fulfillment. But when you follow your inner desire – your inner magnet – something different happens. Even when you have a temporary dip in energy or motivation, you’ll eventually find yourself pulled back on course. The topic simply keeps attracting you, because it’s aligned with who you actually are.
Once you know what is truly important and magnetic in your life, it’s time to begin the process of becoming. So what does that look like?
Be Consistent – Not a Realist
You need consistency far more than you need realism. Success doesn’t come to those who constantly change their minds about what they want to do with their lives. If you’re at the stage of choosing a direction and the people around you are giving you advice that resonates – perhaps listen to them. But if you’re searching for something different, keep an open mind, use the opportunities that cross your path, stay consistent in your actions, and let go of the artificial barriers you’ve placed on yourself.
What seems barely possible today may be entirely achievable after a year of practice and training. A bodybuilder doesn’t build their physique in a single evening – but through sustained practice, they can continuously expand what their body is capable of. The same principle applies to every domain of human development.
Vision and Motivation
You need a vision. A vision of yourself, of your future, of the person you want to become – and you need to be able to actually see yourself as that person. This capacity to see yourself in the role you’ve chosen is critically important. It’s also a kind of honesty test: if you say you want something but genuinely can’t imagine yourself in that role, it may be worth asking whether your stated desire is truly yours – or whether it belongs to someone else’s idea of who you should be.
Vision and motivation matter deeply. But there is one absolutely essential element that many people overlook – and without it, vision alone accomplishes very little.
Real Action: The Method of Small Steps to Great Achievements
You have to start doing what you want to become. There is no other way. And here’s what’s remarkable: once you start doing something in the direction of your dream, you begin becoming your choice, day by day, constantly improving step by step. Want to be a writer? Visualizing yourself puffing a pipe in a leather armchair behind a grand oak desk, surrounded by shelves of your books, is not enough. What matters far more is to start writing. Want to be a painter? Start painting. A tailor? Start sewing. And so on.
The good news: when you start doing what you’ve chosen, you begin learning at a pace that no amount of visualization or wishing could replicate. But most people wait for a magical moment – a sudden leap in their abilities. That moment rarely comes the way they imagine, and so they stay stuck indefinitely in the same place.
The solution is straightforward: hold a far-reaching vision, but focus day-to-day on smaller, achievable milestone goals. Remember – every small goal accomplished on the path to your larger vision brings you closer to success. Every tiny win is a real win. So look around right now for actions you can take today that will move you even one step closer to your dream. Pursue those small milestones consistently. Doing this is worth infinitely more than remaining at the stage of daydreaming and visualization without ever starting the actual practice.
We all have different talents and predispositions. Before committing to a direction, make sure you genuinely care about it and that you have – or can develop – the aptitude it requires. If you’re not yet sure: act. Nothing reveals our talents quite like the practice itself.
