Ancient shamans and shamanesses understood that we are part of a greater whole – part of Nature. But they perceived Nature not merely as the natural world of plants and animals, but as the nature of the universe itself, from whose riches they drew without limit.

Mother Earth and Father Cosmos – I use “Father Cosmos” here rather than the traditional “Father Sky,” because the word Cosmos captures more of that space’s richness today; one could equally say “Father Universe” to point to an even wider scope of existence – Mother Earth and Father Cosmos are aspects of existence of which we ourselves are a part. Ancient shamans grasped and used this connection as the foundation of their practice.

A World Richer Than What We Can See

Mother Earth and Father Universe represent a vast, multidimensional existence. We live in a world far richer than its materially observable portion. Through shamanic vision and practice we can enter a state of perceiving more – liberating ourselves from the boundaries of the physical shell and accessing the spaces of the non-material reality that surrounds and permeates us.

Ancient shamans used herbs and plants that stimulated the mind in specific directions, as well as various rituals with symbolic value and psychological effect, in order to initiate that state of vision. These were the tools available to them – and used responsibly, by practitioners who had spent years in preparation, they opened genuine doorways.

The New Shamanism

Today’s practitioner is capable of entering vision without any supporting substances – at any place and any time – because we now understand the mechanisms involved. We understand how the mind works, what field we are moving through, and how to navigate it deliberately.

This is, in its essence, pure practice: working with the mind to make insights possible through our non-physical aspect – the part of us capable of traveling in time and space. And when we understand the principle at work and the field through which we move, we recognize that this is precisely what can be called a form of New Shamanism: a shamanism that unites modern knowledge of the human mind with the cultivation of our connection to the Space of which we are an integral part – the Space called Mother Earth and Father Cosmos.

It is something beautiful: the ability to unite a modern, scientific approach to perception with the ancient shamanic recognition of our deep bond with the living universe. Remote Viewing – understood in this light – is not merely a research tool. It is the shamanic journey in its new form.
